Which Homeschool Curriculum Should I use?

Posted 5/01/2020Curriculum Reviews

So, it’s that time. You want to know what curriculum you should pick for homeschool next year.

Researching homeschool curriculum is both fun and daunting, and you just want someone to tell you what to pick!

So, today, I’m not going to tell you WHAT to pick, I’m going to tell you HOW you can go about picking a curriculum.

It’s not as hard as you think. It may take more time in the beginning when you are first researching and getting to know what is out on the market, but I know you can DO this.

So let’s DO THIS.

How to Pick Curriculum Know Yourself

Know Yourself

With all the options out there on this amazing thing called the Internet, you need to know what is going to work best for YOU. Then you will know when you come across things that do NOT work for you, and you can scrap it and quickly move on to look at the next thing.

So, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you like to check boxes and need clear direction?
  • Do you like to have a little bit of flexibility within a framework?
  • Do you need every subject planned out for you, with a cohesive plan with all the subjects in one place?
  • Or do you like to adapt and pick and choose for each subject and each child?
  • What is your homeschooling style? More about that later.

Know Your Child

So now that you know what you need to look for for you, you need to do the same thing for your kids!

For each child you have you’ll want to think about what will work best for them and what type of curriculum they will thrive with.

Ask yourself these simple questions for each of your kids:

  • What are their current interests?
  • What are they strong in?
  • What areas are they weak in?
  • Are they hands on, visual or auditory learner?
  • Time of day they are at their best and time of day they are at their worst?
  • What is their attention span like?
  • Do they work well with goals and timers or do they need space and less pressure?
  • Are they content to be alone or do they like to work or play in groups?
  • Do they like art or problem solving?

Once you know these things, you’ll be able to look at what is offered and make good decisions based on what your kids’ styles are.

How to Pick Curriculum Pick Something and Try it

Pick something and try it

So, take your two lists you just made and narrow down what types of curriculums will work best for your family. Then you can do strategic research as you search for curriculums.

Here’s a tip: Don’t get frozen.

Don’t be afraid that you can’t pick something because it’s not going to be PERFECT.

There may not be any perfect homeschool curriculum out there, but there are a lot of GOOD options.

The point is, it won’t be perfect. You need to trust what you know about yourself, your kid, and the curriculum you’ve researched and just go for it. Your goal should be to find a GOOD curriculum.

So, try something for a few weeks, and adjust as you go. But give yourself at least 6-8 weeks with something to really do it justice.

I’ve switched curriculum too soon and too often before and it doesn’t help my kids at all.

How to Pick Curriculum Stop Researching

Stop researching

Once you’ve picked some GOOD curriculum for you children, you can stop researching.

If you keep looking, there will ALWAYS be something bigger, better, faster, shorter, or prettier than what you have. It will drive you bonkers if you keep looking and you will never be confident in if what you picked is the “right” choice.

If you turn off the noise, then you can relax, breathe and focus on what you have right in front of you. And that’s teaching your beautiful kids.

Because that’s what the point of curriculum is. It’s not to have the BEST curriculum, or to have the most PERFECT homeschool year. It’s to teach your kids. The curriculum is the means to an end- focus on giving your kids some good home education.

There is NO perfect curriculum

It just doesn’t exsit.

And in our day and age there are so many options out there that there is definitely going to be something that is GOOD for you and your kids.

So, consider your kids’ learning style, consider your preferences, pick something, and have fun with it!
